Dear Fellow Expat:
The capital of the Florida Republic – for now – is a 1.5-acre farm that’s still in its early formation.
It sits in Lee County, an agricultural stretch known for citrus orchards and more compost per capita resident than any place in the Southeast.
Everything grows here… year-round.
Weeds and oranges… mangoes and berries. Green peppers… and vines.
It’s in the USDA Planting Zone 10.
There is no planting “season.”
You can live off this land year-round – no worries about frost.
Just keep the dang plants wet, okay?
Today – to continue a streak of 10,000 steps daily, I walked up the neighborhood to a lunch spot.
Around me, land prices have quintupled.
Homes three times the size of mine erupt from the ground.
The plots are running low. The costs are going up.
I feel fortunate. We bought at the height of COVID-19.
